Greetings from Haiti! We are excited to announce the arrival
of Gideon August Hartzler on January 15th, at 7:40 PM! Praise the
Lord for a healthy, contented baby. He arrived a little too quickly for the
doctor to arrive, so the nurses got to deliver him! He is a little guy, just
2.5 kg, 47 cm long, with a head circumference of just 33 cm. For those of you still
using English measurements, (that would include me!) that is 5 lbs 8 oz, 18 ½
inches, and 13 inch head circumference.

It was quite an experience here at Hospital Lumiere, as much

Sorry it has been so long since we wrote last. Probably a bad sign if we have to start this with an apology! We have all been well, occasional skin problems here, as opposed to the flu we hear about happening in the States, but otherwise healthy and happy. We had a very different, but blessed Christmas this year! We spent the day at the beach, swimming in the ocean and the children got to play with lots of friends. Not a typical Christmas for us!
We were also blessed to be able to make Christmas cookies and share them. My (Eric's) brother, Fred, and his wife sent us the fixings to make sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies with the frosting, sprinkles, etc. We had a wonderful, aroma filled day baking, decorating, and, of course, tasting Christmas cookies! Our cook came over to share the day and we sent home a plateful for her family to enjoy also.
The first and second of January are independence days here, a huge holiday(s) for the Haitians. The workers at the hospital were more concerned about being off for those 2 days than for Christmas. The Pfister's had a boxful of firecrackers and had a display one night and many of the local Haitians came to enjoy it also. It was rather cool that evening, must have gotten clear down to 75 degrees! Lots of them had on jackets and coats. :)
The children got a new teacher this month, Alyssa Knobloch, a sister from Minnesota, has been here since the beginning of November, and starting in January, she has been coming to teach, so Jami can concentrate on other things, like preparing for a new baby. They have been enjoying Alyssa tremendously, especially as she takes them to the basketball/volleyball/tennis/soccer court to play kickball sometimes for "gym class."
We are trying to be patient waiting for the baby. Our cook, Merleine, has told us repeatedly, "Ou ka rele m, m ap tann!" (You can call me anytime, I am waiting!) We think she is pretty excited about the baby too! Quincy gets frustrated when he tries to cuddle on Mommy's lap, there isn't much left for him!
We are thankful for the team visiting this week, which includes Jami's Uncle Rudy and Aunt Polly Zollinger. This team is a construction/support team for Daryl & Norma Luginbuhl, who moved here this past weekend! We are encouraged to see their enthusiasm and energy as they undertake the Facilities Director position. Daryl will be in charge of renovation for the Hospital and surrounding compound and we hope Norma is prepared to be "Grandma" to the Pfisters & Hartzlers!

Greetings all! Just so everyone doesn't think we dropped off the edge of the world I am going to try to write some lines. Between not having time when we do have internet and the lack of service for several days recently we have not kept up very well with the blog. :( (Sorry)
We had a nice week the first of December with a medical team here. Got to meet some people and renew old friendships with others!
At work, I think everyone sees a new "blan" and is testing me to see what I will give them. Kind of frustrating, but I can see that the problem is a lack of organization and lack of knowledge of the necessary supplies to run a hospital. Please continue to pray for the hospital, staff, and for those of us here with these responsibilities.
Jami is staying busy with school, children, and running a household that includes her family, a cook, a cleaning lady, and a yard man.
Leah and Gracie are enjoying having friends to go play with after school is over, and Conrad enjoys it too, although he doesn't have too much schoolwork yet.
Quincy just moved into a "big boy" bed, to prepare for the new baby coming. He has several words now, Mama, Da, ball, "bup," and baby, but I don't think he understands what a new baby will actually mean to him yet.
We request your continued prayers and pray God bless you each day. I will attempt to post some pictures next!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-19669409903946050692012-11-21T13:49:00.000-08:002012-11-21T13:49:12.218-08:00A "normal" dayA couple of you have asked what a normal day is like for us now that we have settled in somewhat here at Bonne Fin. I decided I'd write about a typical Monday.

Eric wakes up a little after 6 and has devotions alone, eats breakfast, and checks email before heading off to hospital devotions at 7:30. The Hospital Staff has devotions every day Monday thru Friday before beginning day shift. They sing, have a Bible reading and short message, and sing one more song. I wake up around 7 and have devotions alone before the children start waking up. Then the children and I have breakfast, usually cereal, instant oatmeal (if we have it!), or bananas, which are abundant right now. At 8:30, our cook and housekeeper arrive. Our cook does breakfast dishes and starts making lunch. Our housekeeper gathers trash, and begins washing laundry. We have a "depot" as the Haitians call it, pronounced day-po, which the children tell me is a laundry room. It is a separate building from our house, but very close by. We have a utility sink and washer in our depot. So she spends time out there sorting laundry and washing the cloth diapers by hand, which she insists upon! The diapers are perhaps whiter now than when I purchased them! She is a firm believer in Clorox, as most Haitian women are since the cholera epidemic. They clean floors, bathrooms, clothes, sheets, and all our food with Clorox! Occasionally the gentle reminder to take it easy with the Clorox is in order. I teach the children their homeschool all morning. Sometimes, we have time to go for a walk along the hospital road or take a ride up Doctor's Mountain on the 4 wheeler. Then we sit down to lunch when Eric takes a break from the Hospital. Our cook is talented-we have a variety of tasty meals for lunch including pizza, quiche, potato casserole, macaroni casserole, rice and beans with sauce (diri kole ak sos), and she always cuts up fresh fruit usually pineapple, and fresh vegetables on which she puts vinaigrette that she makes herself. She also makes juice to drink. After lunch, we sing and pray together. Sometimes we ask them to sing out of the Haitian song book and sometimes we sing an English song and they sing along in Creole. Sometimes Eric prays in Creole but usually in English. Meal times are becoming more special with our 2 ladies as our language improves and vocabulary increases and we are able to talk more with them. After lunch, the cook cleans up the kitchen and does dishes. And the housekeeper finishes cleaning and laundry. She puts the clean laundry in a pile on the bed so that I can fold or hang, and put away. We have a yard man who also arrives in the morning and works outside all day. He rakes, plants, burns trash & leaves or other debris, and keeps things cleaned up outside. They are all very appreciative of their job and we are becoming used to having people around all day! They usually leave by 3:00. We have English church on Wednesday nights at the guesthouse with Sheila, the Pfister family, and whichever interns and/or teams are around.

I felt very strange about hiring help when I was accustomed to not having that sort of help around. But other missionaries said that it is culturally appropriate (and expected!) and it is not as easy to live here, you will be glad for the help. When speaking with our Creole teacher about it, he said that all mothers in Haiti have help, not just missionaries or upper class people. Even Haitians have someone help them every day, even if it is family that comes. And that has been confirmed when I ask my ladies if they would like to stay home on certain Haitian holidays. I know their children are at home and I asked them if they would like the day off also. They say no, we want to work.

I am not quite as able to describe Eric's day. I know he has meetings with medical staff every day, nurses, or doctors, or whoever needs to talk with him. And he continues Creole lessons with Frantzou, his interpreter at the Hospital.

A few pictures to go along with what I wrote...
Sorry! Monday was a fairly normal day, started with a visit to a school up the mountain a ways on an errand. Beautiful short drive maybe 15 minutes on a 4 wheeler. The road is pretty bad even by Haitian standards thanks to Hurricane Sandy rains, but still easily passable via 4 wheeler. As I drove along, I thought, lots of people in the US drive a long way every weekend to find trails like this to ride on and I get to live on one! Of course this has advantages and disadvantages, such as now after 10 more inches or more of rain today, we can't go anywhere even on a 4 wheeler. :( Then on Tuesday, I was so sick with a stomach bug I couldn't even get out of bed until 4 in the afternoon! Wednesday morning early, about 5 AM, Sheila Moser, myself, and the Pfister family set out to PAP so the Pfisters could fly to an ACWR informational meeting. After 10 minutes on the road, we came to a group of men digging a trench across the road! Apparently they were protesting the poor road conditions by making them worse! Still trying to get the logic of this... After Sheila attempted to reason and persuade them to let us through, she gave up and we turned around, more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to get off the mountain! After we passed on intersection called Twa Mango (Three mangoes) we soon got stuck in a VERY deep rut. If any of you have ever got to experience a Toyota Land Cruiser (not available for retail in the US, too tough) this is not an easy feat! We soon had help from another group of men and were on our way again. After passing through some mountain regions that sharply reminded me of the mountains of Tennessee, (just change the mud huts to trailers) we came to another terrible stretch of road and got stuck AGAIN! Once again, we were assisted by a group of locals, and were soon on our way. At some point we picked up a Haitian who was trying to get to PAP also and was frustrated by the roadblocks. Through him we learned that after we had passed Twa Mango, they had demonstrated there as well and blocked the road. With a Haitian guide, we successfully made it to the main highway and were able to reach PAP in time for the Pfisters to catch their flight. Praise the Lord! On our way back home, Sheila spoke with Tim Reinhard. He had to follow almost the same route to reach a church construction project, and he told Sheila there was approximately 10-12 demonstrations on our road that morning! If they had let us through the first one, we would still never have made it to the main road! Thankfully for Tim, he has worked on the hospital road several times, and the people recognized him as that and let him go through. Praise the Lord! By the time Sheila and I made it back, the demonstrations were almost over and after a little discussion, we were permitted to pass. Wooooosh! Jami sure was glad to see me! Our cook, Merline, finally told Jami about the problems at noon, so she only had all afternoon to worry and pray.
Thursday was a routine day, but Thursday night about midnight it started to rain. It poured and poured and poured all night and most of today! Finally around noon today the rain seemed to really slow and now appears to be done, but the reports on the road are not encouraging. :(
Please pray for the people of Haiti with this devastating rain, erosion, and the destruction to property, both public and private. We are blessed with a dry home, electric, water, and internet, plenty of food, dry clothes, and so much more. Praise the Lord! However, there are so many facing loss of the little they had to begin with. Pray, Rejoice, Pray, Pray, Rejoice, Pray, and again I say Rejoice!
Sorry this got so long, but Wednesday was a most eventful day and the whole week was rather exhilarating!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-80472378942396158182012-11-06T14:22:00.000-08:002012-11-06T14:22:27.897-08:00Life after Hurricane Sandy

We endured last week with Hurricane Sandy only by the grace of God! We are thankful for the sunshine again this week. The Hospital road suffered some damage though and we were unable to get off the mountain until Monday night. The UN (United Nations) is repairing the road, and where they have worked, it is better than before! So good is coming from this terrible storm. We were without electricity and water for a few days. We are thankful for God's provision and protection. Our internet has been sporadic so that is why we haven't posted in a while. Hopefully we will be able to post more often again. We appreciate and need the prayers of those we love! And we are praying for our loved ones at home, too.

Over all, we have felt abundantly blessed and loved. Thanks to all of you who put forth the effort to write to us or send a care package. It is very encouraging to know loved ones are praying for us and the work here. Speaking of work, Eric has begun going to the Hospital, at first to observe and learn more. Eventually, his role will become more involved. Please pray for wisdom and that he can be used according to the Lord's will.

We enjoyed a bit more relaxing weekend in Bonne Fin. We were able to stay in our own house overnight for the first time! Eric was able to get the propane tank and stove installed. And he made some headway on installing the hot water heater. But this weekend we had no hot water. At shower time, I told the children pretend you are standing in a beautiful waterfall. That is what we did, but oh what a cold waterfall!!! Hopefully we can have hot water next weekend! We enjoyed putting more things away and getting rid of some more boxes. The children even did a few school lessons just for fun! We are quite excited for the desks that were donated. We plan to move on Friday and Saturday from Les Cayes to Bonne Fin; we will be thankful to live in our "own" house.

My apologies for the various size pictures! The posts aren't cooperating with me! We were blessed on our trips to Bonne Fin to be able to help a Haitian couple by giving them rides. The husband was injured in a motorcycle accident and broke his arm and leg (left side). 3 weeks ago we were able to take them both to the Hospital where he was seen by Dr. Belding, an American orthopedist that spends a lot of time helping at Hospital Lumiere. The man needed surgery on his arm but his leg was set in a cast. The next weekend, we gave the wife a ride up on Friday and home on Sunday. This week, she asked us to take a package to him. We delivered that Friday evening; Eric was blessed by visiting him. Then today as we were pulling away from our (Bonne Fin) house, she stopped us and asked for a ride home. It was a blessing to be able to help others this way!

We are looking forward to moving "permanently" to Bonne Fin this weekend, si Dye vle (if God wants, Haitian Creole way of saying, Lord willing).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-88808036331224063582012-09-30T17:39:00.003-07:002012-09-30T17:39:53.998-07:00More of life in Haiti

The following are some pictures from the last week. Some at Bonne Fin, some at the Reinhard's, and some at Rainbow Beach. We were greatly encouraged this week as we noticed we could understand more of the sermon on Sunday. We were also able to understand our teacher, Pastor Jean-Claude more and also able to communicate easier with people we met on the street. We still have a long way to go, but at least we noticed some progress!

We do not remember to take photos very well. We do have a photo (creole- foto!) of Maxon, a young man who agreed to come by for an hour or so in the afternoons just to give us some practice with creole beyond our lessons. But probably wait to post it until we have a few more pictures. School is going ok for the girls, but Quincy has not been able to keep a crayon just on paper. :( Now our refridgerator (frijide) has marks all over one side. :(

On the bright side, we just learned that our ship came in! The sea container with most of our furniture and clothes and household things is sitting in Port-Au-Prince (Potopwins) waiting to be released from the customs officers, then it will have to be trucked to the hospital, no small feat! Hopefully the truck does not end up like the one in our last posting!

Last Sunday we were in Bon Fen again, but this time the Pfisters had been invited to a little church up the mountain a little way. Several of the hospital employees attend this church. It is humbling to see the Haitians gladly go to a building that probably would be condemned in the US, pack onto benches that we would hesitate to sit one person on! Their love for God is amazing to see.

With love from Haiti!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-32866000065542881822012-09-05T06:19:00.000-07:002012-09-05T06:19:21.462-07:00Weekend in Bonne Fin

our children got to learn to know the Pfister children much better as they
played together all day! Leah and Gracie got to spend two nights with the
Pfisters’ while Jami and I and the boys stayed with Bob and Sue. Our house is coming along, but does not have screens
on the windows, which is very important!

Their church has an early service to avoid the heat of the day, so we had to wake the children up a little before seven! However, it was quite a blessing as it was cool, also, the electric was out so church was considerably quieter(!) than normal, a plus in my book, as the Haitians like their church services LOUD! That also made it possible for us to make it home in time to listen to Francesville, IN church services over the internet. It sure is quite a tool if used properly.
After both services were over, we had lunch and prepared to go to the beach! The hurricane did not really affect us too much here in Les Cayes, but it sure made some nice waves at the beach! There is a restaurant at the beach that serves fish, lobster, chicken, fried plantains, cole slaw, and of course, rice and beans! Sure made us tired, and back to school in the morning along with Creole lessons.
We appreciate and can feel everyone's continued prayers, especially for the hospital. Please pray for Bro Bob and Sis Sue Beebe as they travel here again and also for the team coming with them.

On another note, we have been fascinated by the variety of countries some of our food comes from!
Quite a bit comes from the states, but we have also gotten candy from Colombia, powdered milk from the Netherlands, (sounds disgusting, but actually is not that bad if it is cold!) and the margarine is from Norway! I saw something from Sweden but I can't remember what it was, some milk from France, some coffee from Hawaii, spaghetti noodles from Italy, and spaghetti "con queso" (with cheese) from Mexico. Of course, all of our fresh fruits and vegetables are grown locally here in Les Cayes. Maybe we will keep this a semi-regular portion of the blog as we see new and interesting foods from all over the world. Also, our children got to taste fresh sugarcane today, I think they liked it!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-39192779638045367542012-08-25T18:39:00.000-07:002012-08-25T18:39:11.349-07:00Hurricane Isaac After much media reports from the states and closely following hurricane Isaac on the internet weather/storm reports, it was anticlimactic for us here at Les Cayes. The exposed windows were boarded up, the toys all put out of the wind, the vehicles moved away from trees, etc... and all that happened was some mild breezes and a lot of rain. We have not seen much flood damage from the compound here, but there may be some more damage to places more vulnerable and to people more vulnerable at this time. We are thankful for your prayers concerning the hurricane, and now also would like to remember the people in Florida as it seems to be heading their direction and picking up steam.
On a related note, we recently learned that an overnight rain in Haiti delays things like a snowfall in the states might delay things!
We are all doing well this weekend, internet service has been spotty due to the hurricane. However, it gave the children a grand play time. They spent most of the day in their swim clothes playing out in the rain. The Haitians consider rain too cold to be out in and never let their children play in it as they might get sick! There was a lady at our door this morning selling us bananas (she is deaf and is basically a beggar). As Eric was finishing up the purchase, Conrad came zipping out of the house in his swim trunks, ready to play in the rain. She started scolding him in Creole to stay out of the rain, you will get sick, you will get cold! He promptly burst into tears! It was rather humorous to watch. In Haiti, children are considered public property. If they see your children doing something dangerous or something they shouldn't, they will tell them to stop.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651760355762914393.post-40437180235533596512012-08-23T16:43:00.000-07:002012-08-23T16:43:14.265-07:00Cultural ChangesAs seen in the pics below, we are adjusting to the culture. For example, to get rid of Quincy's heat rash we quit clothing him unless necessary! And both boys love to lay on the concrete floor! Conrad even took a nap on the floor one day. When I asked him why he did that, he replied, "My imaginary friend was sleeping in my bed." Oh, of course! The children enjoy sitting on the bikes and four wheelers in the garage. And playing "Indians" with Faith Reinhard is a favorite pasttime for the girls. We also enjoy going swimming in a neighbor's pool. The hardest cultural adjustment is church. Church in Haiti is much more crowded, hot, and loud! We were very thankful to gather with Reinhard's, Pfister's and 2 single sisters-Janelle Grassi (lives with the Reinhard's to help them) and Heather Steiner (from Winthrop, lives at Bonne Fin to help at the hospital with accounting). We joined Peoria's service online. On Wednesday evenings we gather with Reinhard's and other missionaries nearby for a singing/Bible Study. Please pray for safety for Haiti as a hurricane is predicted to be coming toward us. Those here in Les Cayes think it will go north of us and hit Port-au-Prince and the Dominican Republic. God has the whole world in His hands! His Will is best!

Greetings from Haiti!

At the end of day 2 in Haiti, we finally have time to sit
down and post some more! We have had 2 whirlwind days of travel and settling in
somewhat, and have felt the Lord’s blessing each step of the way. Other than an
hour delay in Pittsburg, our flights went smoothly and we met all our
connections right on time. We met Tim and Joan Reinhard just as we walked out
of the airport, and the trip from Port Au Prince went remarkably well. All 4 of
the children slept on the road, so after the initial excitement of no
carseats(!) they settled down and rested. One digression, after we landed in
Miami, Conrad asked if we were in “Your-ami”!!!! It took Jami a little time to
understand what he was asking! (As opposed to My-ami, get it?!?)

After what felt like a short night, the 4 wheelers, trucks,
dogs, roosters, and morning sounds of the town woke us up! Quite a change from
our quiet neighborhood in Sardis! (I just noticed all of my sentences end with
exclamation points!) Then after breakfast, time to start creole lessons with
Pastor/professor Jean Claude, a local who has excellent English grammer and
vocabulary skills.

Today the Pfisters came down from the hospital for “ladies
tea” and a birthday party for Heather, one of the other missionaries on the
compound in Les Cayes. Ladies Tea is a weekly gathering for the missionary
wives, to give them some social time.

Our main focus during our time here in Les Cayes is learning
creole, so we request prayer for us for language acquisition, and to help us
understand the culture and how we can work with the culture.

Pictures will be forthcoming once the batteries arrive. AARRGGHH!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16257350048632852210noreply@blogger.com2
